If you like to hear the hits, and pretty much nothing but the hits, then these kinds of holiday shows are definitely for you. Because that’s basically all you get. Most of the sets at Jingle Ball ran around 15 minutes, some were even shorter. An artist would hit the stage, sing the two (maybe three) songs the crowd recognized, then say goodnight. Then the whole process would repeat — again and again. The Chainsmokers, the New York City DJ duo of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, did a fine job in the headliner spot vacated by Mendes. The talented twosome had the capacity crowd rocking, with some 14,000 fans singing loudly along to the multiplatinum hits “Closer” and “Don’t Let Me Down.”.

It was coming up on Christmas, ballerina hair bow, ballet hair bow, pink ribbon clip, pink ribbon ballerina hair clip, ballerina shoes hair clip, ballet slippe and Brenda-the-biscuit-lady was inexplicably happy as she walked to work in the predawn darkness, Brenda didn’t just make biscuits over at the C&L Super Serve for $6 an hour, She served up good cheer, “How you doin’, honey?” she’d greet customers, with such enthusiasm that they had no choice but to smile back, “Dad-gonnit, you are growing up on me!” she’d call to schoolchildren, just to see them grin, “What grade you in now?”..

At least not during her lifetime; reasonable people can disagree, I believe, on whether such an embargo extends from the grave. The silver lining of the “my day” mentality is its unstated corollary: It’s not your day. You’re just a guest! So. Dine like a guest, dance like a guest, drink like a particularly well-behaved guest, wish the couple well like a guest, deflect drama like a guest. Yes, I snuck that last one in as if it were just like the others — because it can be if that’s what you want. You don’t have to meet expectations that aren’t reasonable. Whether you feel guilty for something is up to you. To remain gracious amid others’ rudeness is strictly a matter of choice. You can opt not to nominate yourself for the role of family peacekeeper, and simply model peace instead. You can just say no to throttling, and yes to laughing with people you love.
